Fsu Admissions

Fsu Admissions Then, why this way is or isn’t working or linked causes me to ponder continuously. For me, the process of learning is full of wonderful and surprising events. As I go with the flow of thinking, I often find myself at far-off place from where I originally started. Sometimes pieces of thought which seem to be completely irrelevant to one another, before I know become connected and make one amazing, completed puzzle of my own making. When I was in this kind of community at Saint Andrew’s, I didn’t realize how radical it is to sit at a table and work through problems together. When a student in a sophomore music theory class wanted to ask a classmate a question about the rhythm of a jazz solo, she did, without fear that asking the question would make her seem unintelligent. Not more than two years later my literature teacher gave me as an extra reading the book Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder. The book accomplished its objective and, with ease and short chapters of many philosophers, introduced me to the world of the big questions and the pursuit of truth. At some point, after reading it, I felt like Sophie as I wondered about my beliefs and values and about the world. These unexpected enlightenments, which I call my “Ah-ha” moments, give me butterflies and make my heart flutter. These moments mean so much more to me than memorizing other people’s ideas for exam results. Therefore, the “Ah-ha” moment that gets me excited cannot be overridden by artificial number in my report which my school thinks is so important. I believe that in an academic community that actively places value on collaboration, compassion, respect, and critical thinking, everything else follows. Aquinas’s view is known as Moral Rationalism for a reason. When we read Plato in class, I had agreed with him. When a book is read, a bond forms between author and reader. The author speaks, and the reader listens as they weave together the holes the author leaves them to fill. While the author’s words may be constant, the reader is the true variable. When you have more than one reader together, you have each dimension they bring to the book . I can’t say that any one of these factors stands out as a single attraction of St. John’s. This was the complete opposite anything I had seen argued before. Plato and Thomas Aquinas, for instance, had both made reason and integral part of morality. The only bookcase in my house I can reliably locate things on contains my Doctor Who novels, whatever Shakespeare plays I haven’t taken out, and a selection of classic sci-fi. The biggest moment of clarity that occurred through a book came from my ethics class. We read David Hume’Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals. In it, Hume argues that sentiment is the principle of morality and not reason. Everyone in the classes spoke, not to the professor for the sake of a grade, but to each other for the sake of the exercise. St. John’s college not only interests me, but draws me in very strongly because it combines in the most natural way, the study of politics and philosophy. Although there are no majors or concentrations in St. John’s, I feel that the Great Books curriculum was created to perfectly suit my interestsâ€"approaching the social sciences with a philosophical lens. I considered feelings something to be controlled by reason. Yet here was Hume, acting like reason didn’t matter. Describe your reading habits and discuss an aspect of a particular book that has been important in shaping your thoughts. Whenever I encounter something new, as my math teacher said, I have a habit of viewing it with the suspicious eyes. Rather, it’s the combination of them all that makes St. John’s such a uniquely appealing college. Trying to single out any one appealing aspect of St. John’s is, for me, like trying to pick a favorite piece in a jigsaw puzzle. Some pieces might be more aesthetically pleasing than others, but none of them can compare to the whole picture.

Unable to take this beloved course a second time, I chose my senior classes with more than a touch of melancholy. I was skeptical that even the most appealing humanities class, AP Literature, would be anything but anticlimactic by comparison. I’d become so accustomed to reading the function-focused writings of Locke, Rousseau, Madison, Thoreau, that I found it difficult to see “literature” as anything more than mere stories. I wanted substance that I could actually do something with, and I didn’t expect to find it in AP Lit. Your first step is to submit an application for admission online. Top 10 Tips For College Admissions Essays

Top 10 Tips For College Admissions Essays In California my peers and I had shared the same views. We were all so liberal which at the time felt like a blessing, but when I got to Texas it seemed as though everywhere I went my ideas were challenged. On an almost daily basis I was asked to defend my views on a subject, but my debating skills were limited to logical fallacies and ad hominem attacks so I wasn’t too successful. After that I became obsessed with reading, falling into my old habits of staying up late to read the last chapter, staying in to read at lunch, and going to the library every weekend. I am forever grateful to Pride and Prejudice for reigniting the passion for reading I had lost in middle school. The move to Texas was one of the hardest transitions in my life as I was greeted with a culture shock and had to reinvent myself. In my eyes it didn’t matter what I said because I was right and they were wrong. The Book Thief refuses to flee from this ambiguity. Instead, the characters within its pages are mixtures of everything and its opposite. After years and years of being told what to think and the “right” questions to ask, I had retreated into intellectual paralysis. I would uncomprehendingly coast through my classes, molding my knowledge to fit the next quiz and promptly forgetting it afterwards. The story’s protagonist, Liesel Meminger, learns this lesson through her experiences in Nazi Germany, a place and time in which we are often inclined to believe that good and evil existed as separate entities. The Book Thief introduces a myriad cast of characters and thrusts them into the polarizing world of Nazi Germany. Not one of the book’s characters can be defined in terms of “good” and “evil,” or “right” and “wrong.” Rather, they are all unequivocally human, for better or for worse. The hardship he undergoes and the courage he portrays afterwards have inspired me to embrace who I am. He has always encouraged me to have my own personal outlook and opinion. I think he believes that conformity undermines intellectual potentialâ€"an opinion I now strongly agree with. Moreover, he has taught me to stand my ground and be perceptive. The critical viewpoint I have grown into has trained me not to take things for granted and to be inquisitive. I liked to learn by tinkering and building things. I read books about agriculture, built a chicken coop and a garden, and even slept outside in my family’s field. I found these methods of occupying my time to be more fulfilling than the types of entertainment, namely social media, being employed by those around me. On several occasions throughout my childhood, I decided to become a “scholar;” I would hole myself up with books that I couldn’t quite understand and pore over the pages until my eyes ached. Self-confidence is something I have struggled very long and hard with. I used to worry that I would stand outâ€"especially in school. The views of my society are rather one dimensional towards being different. When reflecting that becoming part of this society would lead me to self-hatred, I have come to see Master as an example. The one absolute truth to our existence is the divide between life and deathâ€"and, some may argue that death is the only cessation of our humanity. Until recently, I felt little obligation to involve myself in any substantive way with humanity as a whole. Before I had defined this connection as one of my most important values, I experimented with various methods of separation. In bursts of inspiration I would “homeschool” myself, withdrawing into seclusion. School didn’t require, and at times, actively discouraged my insatiable desire to figure out the puzzles of the world, so I shoved that side of myself away and forgot that it even existed. This epic is not only a great bookâ€"it is the great book of Poland, as important and symbolic as the Vistula River that flows from the Polish mountains to the Baltic sea. Constitution, Poles are required to memorize sections of Pan Tadeusz, especially those which are thought to embody the core of what it means to be Polish. A Pole reciting the opening of Pan Tadeusz is like an American reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Its author, Adam Mickiewicz, is considered something of a literary god, somewhere between Dante and Shakespeare. So, in a way, The Master and Margarita has helped me to understand my father and appreciate him as an outsider, an individualist. I have also become an individualist who tries to defy the conformism around him. This sense of clarity I received, was due in part to Pride and Prejudice because even though it did not provide me with the answers to my questions, it had given me a sense of self awareness. The notion that prejudice clouds perception was a truth that I don’t imagine I’d have come to as early without the help of Austen and it made me wonder how much more I could learn from reading.

Admission Essay

Admission Essay Rowling’s Harry Potter series was published, I was in third grade. My family bought three copies so my mom, my dad and I could all read it immediately. As a result, my grades suffered and I’ve spent most of my time in math class frustrated, confused, and upset. My teachers, although they tried, were unable to explain things to me and I, to be fair, was not great at listening to their explanations. Rowling’s stories about a boy growing up, having misadventures and facing his destiny enraptured me, but the real witchcraft was in her words. Eventually the couple is able to guide themselves into ever more elaborate notations as they attempt to build proofs to solidify these connected ideas about numbers. The book goes surprisingly far into defining numbers, including advanced concepts such as infinitesimals and the different levels of infinity. This helped me to better understand what numbers are and that I had not appreciated all of the work that had gone into defining them for our use today. In this way they were Socrates-- and I was the student who ended up understanding more than I anticipated, or was expected to, because of the way I was carefully led by the author and his characters. He said only understanding yourself and your enemy guarantees victory. He said winning without fighting is the greatest victory. I think we can’t resolve conflicts, avoid wars, or maintain stability without understanding ourselves and our neighbors. Western military personnel and aid workers are side-by-side with tribal fighters and indigenous community leaders, combating terrorism, lawlessness, and poverty. We are becoming a rich gumbo, not a homogenous puree. Once I’d calmed down a little, I decided to prioritize the readings required for the class. I downloaded the rest of the course selections and printed them out. In the weeks leading up to my departure, I trekked to the nearby field with my dog and my books, and I sat at the picnic table overlooking the woods. I dove into Aristotle and Thucydides while my dog investigated the nearby smells. Every evening, I ticked off the days on the calendar, counting down to the day I would fly from Michigan to Santa Fe. I think understanding is more important than ever, because people of almost any culture can be found in almost every country. Some of our neighbors have F1 visas and sit next to us in school. Some of our neighbors become citizens of our country and permanently change and enrich our national identity. There are no other works that best exemplify that power of words and ideas have had on my life and my outlook on it. C.S. Lewis himself was a big fan of Plato; his works were the key that allowed me to decipher the meaning encoded in the Plato that I had read. The Last Battle was the spark that gave me hope, Plato’s Allegory of the Cave gave me strength, and Plato’s Republic is what gave me the intellectual confidence in the presence of the ideal and the universal. His ability to so perfectly enunciate why we must never lose hope, and always struggle towards the ideal. I recall my afternoon arrival at St. John’s in a blur of adobe buildings, warm placita bricks, and inviting, clean sheets. The next morning, when I woke up, I walked out onto the balcony of the second floor of the Murchison dormitory. I sat down at the plastic picnic table and breathed in the crisp morning air. I watched the sienna hills tinged with gold in the east as the sun slowly revealed itself. I was never able to portray the view quite as I saw it. The only time I loved math was sophomore year when we did proofs. They were puzzles and fascinating in a way that other math wasn’t. I, all artists, and those seeking some sort of universal truth, must try to achieve that purest, most visceral understanding. That idea, presented in Plato’s work, had not yet become clear to me, until I finished reading The Last Battle.

4 Steps For Writing A Great College Admission Essay I couldn’t find any dominance or submission in the classes and everyone was truly involved in learning from each other, whether it was a tutor or student. My values in education and learning had started to collide with the ones in my school. Although I don’t love having a constant existential crisis, I do love reading things that push me to consider new ways of thinking. That’s why I consider this a great book, because it takes creativity and self- reflection and ideas about love and brings them together in new and powerful ways that make me feel more attuned to my surroundings. Although his writing is not easy to understand at first, I find that it’s worth the struggle. Everything Calvino writes is the perfect mixture of scientific fact and fable-like fantasy, and I’m so glad that I took my mom’s advice in that bookstore in New York. This prompts me to wonder if the universe is beautiful or not. At the actual seminar at night, they sat around the big table and the exploration of ideas started to happen on the heels of each other. Above all, I was amazed how tutors and students were connected with each other. The spectacle of students learning from each other in the seminar free from competition was so beautiful that it made my heart warm with the fire of passion for hope to be there. Even if nobody told them to do it, the students were eager to learn from each other, spontaneously, even in the hallway, dining room, and outside in the beauty of nature. Students were lying on the grass so peacefully reading a book yet eagerly talking with couple of friends who took same seminar and then going back to reading again. In my previous experience of the education system that I was given in Korea had its purpose having the value that students could grasp a great amount of knowledge at short time from teachers lecturing. However my purpose was fulfilling my curiosity, rather than just memorizing other’s idea for the matter of winning or losing competition with my friends. Therefore the way I learn had to be different from the way of learning where the “efficiency”, which my school claimed, was mostly concerned. Application Guide

Application Guide This book is foundational to me because of its portrayal of divine creatures and the exhibition of basic human desires and imperfections. I was trapped in a classroom where my peers could only see one truth, one dimension of a book because they hadn’t read it. The Yosarian in me changes the question from “How do we succeed? ” to “How do we minimize the loss of civilian and allied life while we inevitably fail? ” The Clevenger in me responds to this new question with a sense of patriotic, even divine, duty. As a small child, I did not fully grasp the implications of translation and the issues that arise from recitation. My initial impression was that the truth of Lolita, its ugliness, was hidden behind its beautiful prose. It uses flowery words of love and affection to trick the reader into believing in some kind of horrid love story. Maybe there was someone who had successfully revealed the “truth” of Lolita in all it’s ugliness, someone who had pushed past all Lolita ’s beauty and emerged with a final knowledge of it. It was late December and the snow was gently falling outside. They weigh so heavily on each other that it is impossible for them to existence independently. There is no way to read Lolita and believe one has at last found the truth of Dolores and Humbert’s story. It is a book of perpetual discussion, conversation, and questioning. The D’aulaire’s take on Greek tales gives sweetness and life to staggeringly human stories while still painting characters in divine light. Although gods, the heroes of Olympus would make mistakes, get angry, and fall in love. I had thought that my job as the reader was to peel back the layers of beautiful imagery to reveal the novel’s and Humbert’s grotesque center. I wanted to brush off the proselike dust off an old book. I had thought that the truth was beneath this, like a mystery waiting to be solved. This is why I think that “warheads on foreheads” is strategically counterproductive. Being given the Sisyphean task of killing our way out of an insurgency, the only response I can have is to work very hard to be sure that the warheads are landing on the right foreheads. Now, as a student of Latin, I understand the strain of translation. No two translations are ever the same, usually due to the education and bias of the translator. The D’aulaire’s remain true to the wildly complex myths of Ancient Greece while crafting an accessible book for children. I can already see itâ€"myself, sitting in classrooms where everyone wants to be thereâ€"where I am not being measured, rated, scored, and I can learn through communicating, not testing. Where Johnnies not only question my truths, but theirs too. So, must all beauty be false and can truth only come ugly? Then, how does one interpret morality in relation to beauty? This basic principle that even gods made mistakes allowed me to process my everyday life. Although divorce is not an issue of the gods, they fell in and out of love and this was synonymous with events in my own life, and with members of my own family. While arguments with my brother could never be described as divine, our struggles often reminded me of the fights between Apollo and Artemis, siblings who squabbled but ultimately loved each other. The story of Orpheus, the musician who looked back at the last second to ensure his beloved was following him, remains a non-example in matters of perseverance.

What Is Chemical Kinetics

Chemical kinetics is the study of chemical processes and rates of reactions. This includes the analysis of conditions that affect speed of a chemical reaction, understanding reaction mechanisms and transition states, and forming mathematical models to predict and describe a chemical reaction. The rate of a chemical reaction usually  has units of sec-1, however, kinetics experiments may span several minutes, hours, or even days. Also Known As Chemical kinetics may also be called reaction kinetics or simply kinetics. Chemical Kinetics History The field of chemical kinetics developed from the law of mass action, formulated in 1864 by Peter Waage and Cato Guldberg. The law of mass action states the speed of a chemical reaction is proportional to the amount of reactants. Jacobus vant Hoff studied chemical dynamics. His 1884 publication Etudes de dynamique chimique led to the 1901 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (which was the first year the Nobel prize was awarded). Some chemical reactions may involve complicated kinetics, but the basic principles of kinetics are learned in high school and college general chemistry classes. Key Takeaways: Chemical Kinetics Chemical kinetics or reaction kinetic is the scientific study of the rates of chemical reactions. This includes the development of mathematical model to describe the rate of reaction and an analysis of the factors that affect reaction mechanisms.Peter Waage and Cato Guldberg are credited with pioneering the field of chemical kinetics by describing the law of mass action. The law of mass action states the speed of a reaction is proportional to the amount of reactants.Factors that affect the rate of a reaction include concentration of reactants and other species, surface area, the nature of the reactants, temperature, catalysts, pressure, whether there is light, and the physical state of the reactants. Rate Laws and Rate Constants Experimental data is used to find reaction rates, from which rate laws and chemical kinetics rate constants are derived by applying the law of mass action. Rate laws allow for simple calculations for zero order reactions, first order reactions, and second order reactions. The rate of a zero-order reaction is constant and independent of the concentration of reactants.rate kThe rate of a first-order reaction is proportional to the concentration of one reactants:rate k[A]The rate of a second order reaction has a rate proportional to the square of the concentration of a single reactant or else the product of the concentration of two reactants.rate k[A]2 or k[A][B] Rate laws for individual steps must be combined to derive laws for more complex chemical reactions. For these reactions: There is a rate-determining step that limits the kinetics. The Arrhenius equation and Eyring equations may be used to experimentally determine activation energy.Steady-state approximations may be applied to simplify the rate law. Factors That Affect Chemical Reaction Rate Chemical kinetics predicts the rate of a chemical reaction will be increased by factors that increase the kinetic energy of the reactants (up to a point), leading to increased likelihood the reactants will interact with each other. Similarly, factors that decrease the chance of reactants colliding with each other may be expected to lower the reaction rate. The main factors that affect reaction rate are: concentration of reactants (increasing concentration increases reaction rate)temperature (increasing temperature increases reaction rate, up to a point)presence of catalysts (catalysts offer a reaction a mechanism that requires a lower activation energy, so the presence of a catalyst increases the rate of a reaction)physical state of reactants (reactants in the same phase may come into contact via thermal action, but surface area and agitation affect reactions between reactants in different phases)pressure (for reactions involving gases, raising pressure increases the collisions between reactants, increasing reaction rate) Note that while chemical kinetics can predict the rate of a chemical reaction, it does not determine the extent to which the reaction occurs. Thermodynamics is used to predict equilibrium. Sources Espenson, J.H. (2002). Chemical Kinetics and Reaction Mechanisms (2nd ed.). McGraw-Hill. ISBN 0-07-288362-6.  Guldberg, C. M.; Waage,P. (1864). Henry David Thoreau Transcendentalist Writer - 2009 Words

Henry David Thoreau was a nineteenth century American author who lived during the height of Transcendentalism. He became an important contributor to this movement (â€Å"H. D. T.† Poetry Foundation). Thoreau received much information about this movement from Emerson, a noteworthy friend of Thoreau. Thoreau wrote many significant works in American literature, including Walden and â€Å"Civil Disobedience.† The works of Henry David Thoreau were strongly influenced by the Transcendentalist movement and centered around his stay at Walden Pond. Henry David Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts, on July 12, 1817, to John and Cynthia Thoreau. He was the third of four children (Bloom 7). The Transcendentalist movement was centered in Concord. The philosophy of Transcendentalism stated that knowledge originated from the voice of God within humans. This knowledge was essentially their â€Å"inner light† or â€Å"over-soul† (Goodman). In other words, one’s conscience is an innate trait. It was society that corrupted people’s moral sense. Despite the fact that many Transcendentalists wanted to change society, they believed that these changes had to begin with individuals (â€Å"H. D. T.† Encyclopedia Britannica). These changes that were advocated by Transcendentalists pertained to pressing social issues at the time, such as the mistreatment of Native Americans, the Mexican War, and the expansion of slavery (Goodman). Transcendentalism was the antithesis of Unitarianism, another philosophical movement that was developing at the time. Many of the major theories of Unitarianism were developed by John Locke, who believed that the best way for people to grow in knowledge and understanding was through the use of one’s senses and the scientific method (Goodman). Transcendentalists believed that there were two ways to attain knowledge: through the senses or through intuition. The latter, they believed, was significantly more useful than the former. Global Financial Cisis Credit Crunches and Deleveraging

Question: Discuss about the Global Financial Cisis Credit Crunches and Deleveraging. Answer: Introduction: The financial crisis that occurred in 2008 affected all economies in the world leading to increased hyperinflation on a large scale. This lead to the loss of homes, millions of jobs and a loss of up to twenty trillion dollars in the global economy making it the next largest financial crisis since the great depression(Rudd, 2009). There were unexpected consequences in that period. Large financial institutions that were thought to be safe from any such crisis were vulnerable to the pointy that they collapsed and others being bailed out by the $1.4 trillion rescue package signed by George Bush but it still wasnt enough to shield them from the crisis (Ferguson Heffes,2010). The documentary the inside job was an eye opener on future financial proceedings to my career, I felt pity for the victims since they lost their jobs and homes by being vulnerable to the greed of scrupulous executives (Rudd, 2009). The most annoying and surprising thing is that many CEOs and key decision makers who were responsible for the crisis ended up profiting or escaping any prosecution leaving the victims helpless, that was not fair at all. A good example is Joseph Cassano; head of the AIG financial product division did not face the consequences of losing $11 billion but rather kept as a consultant with lucrative salaries and allowances (Shah, 2009). The question of who is to blame for the financial crisis is simple but way deeper in the early 80s; I blame the government as the primary cause of this crisis. The deregulation of economic co-operations like banks and insurance companies gave them a power play in the financial market where they could look after their interest in the most lucrative way without considering any consequences (Keen,2009). The Reagan administration made it worse since banks were given a go ahead in making risky investment with public saving deposits which made a loss of tax payers money with over $100 billion. These financial institutions merged in larger firms where they influenced the markets. They considered them key players, and they already had politicians in their pockets manipulating the government to turn a blind eye. The issuing of the sublime mortgages was a farfetched risky investment that the government overlooked. Anyone was qualified for a mortgage in the eyes of the lender and bankers, disregarding the strict qualifications not enforced by the government which considered these institutions in good administrators of the financial markets but that was not the case (Rudd, 2009). As the saying goes history likes to repeat itself, regardless of the 2008 financial crisis, the government still hasnt learned its lesson. The economy in America is weaker than the recession; theres increased the unemployment rate, an increase in inflation. Many industries have relocated to foreign countries where the market environment is conducive than the country which has hostile reforms. The gap be tween the rich and the poor has increased since the Obama administration did not change the economic reforms as initially promised; this means that the country is using the fundamental reforms that were in place when the financial crisis occurred. The debt crisis in America is far more disturbing in that it could lead to a hyperinflation causing another severe crisis shortly (Ferguson Heffes, 2010). This global crisis has not received Justice, its worse when the culprits are still walking around and consulting in the countrys economic matters. When I look back at the previous crisis, the people received justice. In 1929 the head of the new York exchange landed in prison, the 1980s savings and loans scandal over a thousand people went to jail for it but in the 2008 crisis only one individual who went to prison for his part in the crisis, how about the others? That remains alarming. Policy makers have a simple but crucial task of learning from past mistakes (Keen,2009).The economic reforms that were to be made by the Obama administration should be transparent and straightforward enough for the public to understand and avoid any such incidences experienced. Creation of financial products should be scrutiny to avoid investments that would lead to a bubble causing another crisis (Shah, 2009). The 2008 financial crisis caused by just the deregulation which leads to financial institutions having freedom of playing their games for their personal gains. The government turned a blind eye trusting them with the financial markets only to realize when it was too late. I recommend that powerful reform and policies to be introduced to the financial industry which will prevent another crisis (Rudd, 2009). Drub Abuse Essays - Drug Culture, Drug Control Law, Euphoriants

Drub Abuse In the United States of America, we, the people value several things, some of which are freedom, expanding and taking care of our families and our financial security. We, the people, take such things for granted. We also discourage some behavior, such as crime, laziness and use of illegal drugs. Drug abuse is one of the most discouraged behaviors in our country. Use of illegal drugs is harmful to the userand all those with whom the user comes in contact. There are over 40 million illegal drug users in the world today and America is the biggest market for drugs1 . There are more drug dealers in this country, than there are dentists. Illegal drug abuse must be stopped; it hurts our society, hurts us, and, most of all, hurts the user. Drug users are parasites, feeding off society's money, taxes and insurance. Every type of insurance goes up because of drug abuse, including auto, health and homeowners. Worst of all, the crime rate will sky rocket if we let this behavior continue. Illegal drugs and their abusers are a plague to society for many different reasons.. Drugs have very harmful effects on the user and the people with whom the user interacts. The user is affected in many ways. The most popular drug in America, alcohol, is generally thought of as socially acceptable and relatively harmless. But it can have devastating effects. Alcohol might seem very harmless but it can harm the user very easily. Alcohol is easy to obtain and consume. It is taken as a beverage and, since it is legal, it can be purchased at the corner store. The immediate effects on the user are relaxation and a slight anesthetic effect. Alcohol is a very addictive drug. There are more than 18 million alcoholics in America2 , an indication of how widespread its harmful effects are. Alcoholics normally drink a lot on mornings and weeknights, at times which separate them for noraml social drinkers. Often, the alcohol will bring out a violent temper and often, alcoholics abuse, physically and mentally, their friends and family. Drinking makes the drinker feel he is more confident. The drinker thinks he is in control, even if a little high, and he might get behind the wheel of his car and go for a drive. Drunk driving is deadly. Hundreds of thousands of people get killed every year due to drunk driving. Other physical effects of drinking are vomiting, passing out and sometimes, if enough alcohol is consumed over a long enough period of time, or if mixed with other drugs, death. Marijuana is a popular, and illegal, drug. Its largest consumers are young adults. Marijuana is smoked in a pipe or rolled in a cigarette. Thirty-seven percent of people between ages 12-17 have tried marijuana.3 Marijuana gives a slight buzzing feeling of light-headedness. Experimentation with marijuana is dangerous because studies show that 60% of people who smoke marijuana on a regular basis move on to try harder drugs soon after.4 Marijuana tends to diminish the ambition and motivation in the user. In the long run, it may cause lung cancer and other respiratory problems. Cocaine is another popular, illegal, street drug. Cocaine is snorted or smoked as crack(a cheaper and, as a result of being so affordable, more addictive way). Cocaine gives the user a sense of well-being and extra energy. Cocaine is one of the most dangerous drugs. In 1995, over 500,000 emergency room accidents were cocaine- related.5 Cocaine is one of the worst drugs because it causes respiratory illness and kills mucus membranes. Heroin is the most addictive dangerous illegal drug on the streets. You'll become a so- called junkie if you use it. It affects the hygiene and personal appearance of the user a great deal, because nothing is as important to the user anymore as where that next hit will come from. Heroin is injected and sometimes snorted. It causes great euphoria, but also nausea and vomiting. Like any street drug, its user does not know what potency he is getting from batch to batch. Therefore, there is always the risk that he will overdose and die. Withdrawal from heroin can cause severe illness and death. Drug abuse leads to
